The Introvert Advantage: How to Thrive in an Extrovert World by Marti Olden Laney, Psy.D Book Review

By Samia Mehbub

The Introvert Advantage: How to Thrive in an Extrovert World by Marti Olden Laney, Psy.D is a promising book that helps introverts recognize their strengths and unique differences. In a fast-paced world, introverts are often seen as slow, lethargic, and incapable of accomplishing as much as extroverts can. However, introverts are just special humans out there that need to recharge their energy to do certain things. In a positive light, the tendency to have to renew themselves all the time doesn’t mean that they can’t be successful. It just means that they need their own personal time first when it is required, and then they can get out and conquer the world.

In this book, you will find that there are countless tips on how “innies” can refuel their batteries to be able to have their chance to shine. Included inside are also self-assessments to find out how much of an introvert the readers are. Remarkably, this book also provides guidance for parents who have introverted children and for partners that are introverts and extroverts. These are lifelong tips that help build better relationships through clear and effective communication with thoughtful and considerate actions.

Additionally, although this book is not on the bestseller list, it should be because of the stigma of introversion. There are many habits that introverts have, such as talking, moving, and reacting slower than others. They need time to think and process information before they respond. For this reason, introverts tend to beat themselves down for it, without realizing why they function differently than others. However, even if they get easily stimulated, they are insightful and detailed when they write or speak. When it comes to relationships, they are very loyal, and if you tell them to think about creative pursuits, they are very imaginative and passionate.

Still today, introverts are mistaken for shy or withdrawn, but that is not the case. Those all fall into separate categories. This book allows us to understand these different characteristics, embrace our differences, and to seek and make room to grow even if extroverts are more rewarded. The lesson is that introverts can still practice the way they talk, sound, and use body language to embody confidence and shine their light.

This book destigmatizes introverts and shows them as completely human. It addresses how introverts can have friends, even if they’re few, and even make the effort to meet new people. By giving strategies and tips on how to be friendlier by engaging with people, this reminds them to simply slow down instead of going too hard on themselves for being different.

Finally, just because people are introverts, doesn’t mean that they “have to” isolate themselves all the time. Sometimes, quiet confidence can shake the world in ways that many of us can’t imagine. By being brave for being authentic, introverts can stand out and show that it’s more than just being in an empty place. As a result, it’s about unlocking our inner strengths and taking advantage of its potential.
